She was born in Jamaica on 25 June 1915. She came to America from Jamaica in the mid-1960s due to a nursing shortage. She worked as a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital for 15 years and also cared for children at a local welfare center.

In May 2025, it was reported that she lived in the same nursing home as another 109-year-old, Veronica Pheney, who was less than two months younger than her.

On 27 August 2025, Gwen and Veronica were visited by Ben Meyers, the CEO of LongeviQuest.

Her age was validated by LongeviQuest on 23 August 2025.

A distant cousin of mine, Edward Flint Walcott, was born on June 2, 1830 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and passed away on January 11, 1938 in Everett, Massachusetts at the age of 107 years, 223 days. There is a lot of documentation supporting his age. I hope Mr. Walcott’s age can be validated. He would have been the world’s oldest person at the time of his death being 3 years older than Anna Wheeler.
