Ides Kihlen was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, on 10 July 1917 to Swedish immigrant father and Argentine mother of Swiss origins. She spent her childhood between Santa Fe, Chaco, and Corrientes, in close contact with nature—an experience that would shape her artistic sensibility.

From a young age, she showed an inclination for both painting and music. She trained at the Ernesto de la Cárcova School of Decorative Arts in Buenos Aires and studied with renowned teachers such as Pío Collivadino, Vicente Puig, Juan Batlle Planas, Emilio Pettoruti, André Lhote (in Paris), and Kenneth Kemble. Simultaneously, she studied piano at the National Conservatory of Music and went on to perform as a concert pianist. The relationship between music and color would become a constant in her artistic production.

Despite having painted throughout her life, Kihlen kept her work private for over eight decades. She worked quietly and freely, unconcerned with trends or public exhibition. Many of her pieces were stored away, reworked, or even destroyed by herself, in a continuous and personal creative process.

Only in 2000, when she was over 80 years old, did she begin to show her work to the public. In 2002, she held a major retrospective at the National Museum of Decorative Arts, which marked the beginning of her growing recognition. Since then, she has exhibited in galleries and museums in Argentina and abroad, establishing herself as a singular figure in contemporary Argentine art.

Her style is characterized by experimentation with painting, collage, and mixed media, incorporating paper, thread, and various assembled materials. Her works are often organized into series and feature vibrant abstract forms with a strong rhythmic and chromatic imprint that reflects her musical background.

In 2018, she was declared a Distinguished Figure of Culture by the Buenos Aires City Legislature. She also received tributes and retrospective exhibitions at institutions such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, where her career spanning more than a century was recognized.

Ides Kihlen continued painting and playing the piano daily even after turning 100. Her life and work reflect a profound conviction: art is not just a profession, but a way of life.

She currently lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Her age was validated by LongeviQuest on 7 March 2026.

Goodbye, Don Ubaldo: Río Gallegos' oldest resident passed away at 107.
Ubaldo Cayún died early Monday morning in the capital of Santa Cruz province. La Opinión Austral visited him several times to mark his birthday and learn his story.

8825

Ubaldo Cayún, the oldest resident of Río Gallegos, passed away in the early hours of 23 February 2026.

8826

Cayún was born on 5 November 1918, on the island of Chiloé, Chile, and after several decades working in the fields planting potatoes, legumes, and wheat, he decided to migrate to Argentina in the mid-1990s.

Like most Chilean immigrants, he settled in the Belgrano neighborhood, where he built his house.

Together with his wife, he had three children: José, Laura, and Álvaro. The family grew, and on his last birthday, he received the affection of his seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Given Don Ubaldo's longevity, La Opinión Austral visited him several times on his birthday.

Until his final days, Don Ubaldo enjoyed drinking mate, watching sports, and, if it was soccer, watching the matches of Colo-Colo, the team he loved.

Last year, on his 107th birthday, José, his eldest son, recounted what Ubaldo was like as a father.

“As a dad, he was the best. The times when we were growing up were very difficult to support a family; we grew up in the countryside. Farm work is hard, especially planting, and he never slacked off for anything. He was always on the go, which is why we sometimes ask, ‘How did he live so long?’ because his life wasn’t easy. He was always a hard worker,” he said.

The oldest known living person in Argentina, Angélica Tiscornia, celebrated her 113th birthday in Buenos Aires on August 22nd.

The director of her nursing home informed LongeviQuest that Angélica Tiscornia spent a delightful day celebrating, enjoying cake and traditional Argentine dishes, accompanied by a violinist performing at her side, and surrounded by the company of fellow residents.

Tiscornia was born in Gualeguay, Entre Ríos Province, Argentina, on 22 August 1912. She had six siblings, all of whom she outlived. At some point, she got married and went on to have a daughter named Marta. She outlived her only daughter, who passed away due to heart problems. In 1973, she moved to the city of Buenos Aires where she has resided ever since.

Isabel Barletta, a resident of Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina, passed away on 12 May, at the age of 113 years, 242 days.

Isabel Barletta was born in a house on Primera Junta Street in Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 12 September 1911. The family later moved to a house her father and brothers had built on José Martí Street. Her father was an Italian immigrant. She attended elementary school on Francisco Bilbao Street. Later, she studied drawing, painting and Art History at the Fernando Fader school.

Her younger sister, Deolinda, was alive in January 2020, aged 104. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied: “There is only one and it is to respect the other. Because they are just like me, just like everyone else. God made them all equal…”

At the time of her passing, she was the third-oldest documented person ever to live in Argentina, after Casilda Ramona Benegas and Evangelista Luisa López.
