Isle of Man’s Oldest Resident, Evelyn Teare, Turns 108

Evelyn Teare, a resident of Ramsey, Isle of Man, UK, is celebrating her 108th birthday today, according to Manx Radio.

Evelyn Teare (née Hider) was born in Poona, India, on 19 October 1917. She was the third of five children born to Thomas William Keys Hider, headmaster of Bishop’s High School in Poona, and Lydia Maud Crayden. Evelyn received her education in various parts of England, including Ashford Grammar School, before training as a nurse and midwife. During the Second World War, she served at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College Hospital (UCH) in London.

While at UCH, Evelyn worked alongside the renowned novelist Agatha Christie, who was training as an apothecary’s assistant. It was also there that she met her future husband, H. Douglas Teare, MHK, who was then on the staff of Sir Clement Price Thomas, a visiting consultant to the hospital.

They got married on 15 August 1945, and eventually had three sons, Richard, Philip, and Martin. While raising her children, Evelyn served as a local councillor and played a key role in establishing and promoting the family planning clinic in Midhurst. Later, she and Douglas moved to Isle of Man, where they transformed a former chapel into their family home.

She is only the second recorded person in the Isle of Man to reach the age of 108, following Doris Watkins (25 November 1902 – 11 November 2011), who passed away just weeks before her 109th birthday.
