Lloyd Geering, New Zealand’s Oldest Man, Turns 108

Sir Lloyd George Geering, the oldest living man in New Zealand, celebrated his 108th birthday on 26 February. He is a theologian who faced charges of heresy in 1967 for teaching that the Bible’s record of Jesus’ death and resurrection is not true.

Geering was born in Rangiora, New Zealand, on 26 February 1918. In 1936, Geering went on to study mathematics at the University of Otago. He “embraced” the Christian tradition in 1937, after a friend invited him to church and to the Student Christian Movement. He was elected president of the Otago Student Christian Movement in 1939. Geering was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship by the University of Otago in 1939 and graduated Bachelor of Arts with first-class honours in 1940. Geering was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1943.

On 22 May 1943, Geering married Nancy Marie McKenzie at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Timaru. The couple had two children before Nancy died of tuberculosis in Dunedin on 4 October 1949. On 20 November 1951, Geering married Elaine Morrison Parker, a speech therapist, with whom he had one child. Elaine Geering died in 2001. In 2004, Geering married Shirley Evelyn Adams, who died in 2021 at the age of 95.

Following the passing of 108-year-old James Easton (12 December 1916 – 17 September 2025), he became the oldest living man in New Zealand.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Geering! 🥂

When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."
