Reverend Bill Morgan, Vice-Doyen of Australia, Celebrates 109th birthday

Reverend William “Bill” Morgan, the oldest living man in Victoria, and the second-oldest in Australia, celebrated his 109th birthday in Melbourne on October 23rd. His birthday was confirmed and reported by Medianet and the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association.

Morgan was born on 23 October 1915, in the suburb of Seddon in Melbourne. He was one of six siblings, with four brothers and a sister. During his time at Scotch College, he stood out as both a leader and an athlete, serving as school captain, rowing captain, and Ruckman for the 1st XVIII. His athletic talents continued to flourish at Melbourne University, where he represented Victoria in rugby.

After completing his studies, he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in Malvern on 24 April 1944. Morgan went on to serve as a minister for nearly 50 years, leading congregations across South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. With the union of the Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches in 1977, he became a member of the Uniting Church. Bill retired from active ministry in 1984 but continued to serve in a pastoral role for the next 20 years.

Morgan was married twice. His first wife, Joan, was the mother of his three children: Heather, John, and Libby. Joan passed away in 1957. Later in life, he met and married Jessie, who sadly passed away in 2011.

Happy belated birthday!
