Marcelle Lévaz - of Remicourt, Liege, Belgium - is celebrating her 111th birthday today.

She was born in Braives, Liege, Belgium, on 18 March 1911. Following the death of Julia Van Hool on 29 April 2021, she became the oldest living person in Belgium. Her age is validated by the ESO.

Birthday report (though photos are probably from yesterday):

"The dean of the Belgians is celebrating her 111th birthday this Friday, March 18. Born in Braives, in the province of Liège, on March 18, 1911, Marcelle Lévaz worked for a long time as a milliner. Thanks to her particularly impressive longevity, she had successively become in 2021, dean of the Walloons, then dean of the Belgians before finally becoming the dean of the Benelux.

" It is extremely rare for a person to reach this age in Belgium, " says Anthony Croes-Lacroix, volunteer at ESO, an organization that lists supercentenarians. “ Out of 1000 centenarians, only one becomes a supercentenarian, a term that refers to people reaching 110 years old. Last year she became the 42nd person to become a supercentenarian in Belgium and becomes the 19th person to reach 111 years old! ”

To beat the current Belgian record, however, we will have to wait a few more months, specifies Anthony Croes-Lacroix: " The record has been held since December 6, 2002, almost 20 years ago, by Joanna Turcksin. She had reached the particularly advanced 112 years and 186 days ."

An exemplary form
Marcelle lived alone until she was 108 years old. She then finally joined the White Farm in 2019. " She has her little habits which are all cute", explains with a smile Paola, the nurse in charge of the floor where Marcelle is. " She takes her meals alone, she eats relatively well. She always tells me: I don't have a big appetite, but at 111, maybe I won't have that appetite! But she knows what's good, she knows how to sort out when it's something more exceptional and she eats much better!"

Despite her 111 years, she remains in very good shape, says Paola: " If you listen to her, she will tell you that her legs hurt, but from a health point of view, she is fine. The doctor is very happy, she went to the cardiologist two months ago and he said to her: "See you again in three years!". So, it's only happiness for us! "
