Canadian Woman Hersilia Moores Turns 110

Hersilia Moores, a resident of Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, celebrated her 110th birthday on 22 November.

Moores was born in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador, on 22 November 1915. She was the youngest of four children. Her father had worked as a wireless radio operator for the Marconi Company, and when she was six, the family moved to Labrador, settling near the Point Amour lighthouse.

She later married a teacher, Murray Moores. Together, they lived and taught in several communities around the province, including Bonavista and Little Bay Islands, before eventually settling in Brigus after Murray retired as principal of Brigus Academy. They had two sons, Wallace—who died in 2012—and Lorne Moores. At 65, she earned her driver’s license and continued driving until she was 94.

She is the first known person in Newfoundland and Labrador to reach the age of 110 since Mary Power in 1994, and only the third known individual in the province to do so.
