Irene was born in Richmond, Kentucky, USA, on 5 April 1915. She had five siblings—two brothers and three sisters. Longevity ran in her family—each of her sisters lived into their mid to late 90s—though her mother passed away at the age of 49 due to complications from diabetes.

She attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in Richmond, which is now known as Eastern Kentucky University. Shortly after completing her studies, she moved to Washington, D.C., along with her sister Ruby Burrus. Both began careers with the federal government. Though Irene and Ruby maintained separate residences, they remained extremely close until Ruby’s passing.

Irene never married or had children. Nevertheless, she led a remarkably independent life, living in the same apartment in Alexandria, Virginia, for over 50 years. Instead of owning a car, she relied entirely on public transportation to get around. Remarkably, she continued to care for herself well into her centenarian years. In her younger days, she enjoyed staying active and frequently traveled, embracing life with energy and curiosity.

Even in her centenarian years, Irene remained a voracious reader with a sharp interest in current events and politics.
