Mr. Haidle now sits in a wheelchair and a conversation with him is not possible. He is also on medication.
He was trained as a mechanic and took part in all Wehrmacht campaigns during the war, so he was very lucky to have survived. Jugoslavia took him as a prisoner of war in 1944 and he spent 4 years in a prison camp. He has unfortunately outlived both his wife and his daughter, who was born in 1956.
The reason he doesn't speak much anymore isn't mental decline, but his decreasing hearing, which makes it almost impossible for him to understand unfamiliar voices.
