Léonise Sinzélé, a resident of Les Anses-d’Arlet in the French overseas department of Martinique, celebrated her 110th birthday on 15 March, according to Outre-mer la 1ère and France-Antilles (Martinique).
Léonise Sinzélé was born in Les Anses-d’Arlet, Martinique, France, on 15 March 1915. She was a bèlè dancer. At some point, she married and had seven children.
In December 2019, Léonise attended the inaugural gathering of Martinican centenarians at Fort Saint-Louis. In 2023, she was also present for the certification of the “Blue Zones” title. On her 110th birthday, she was joined by her daughter Juliette, her son Georges, and her grandson François to celebrate the special occasion. At the time, she also had a 102-year-old sister living nearby.
Martinique has been recognized as a “Blue Zone”—a region where inhabitants often live significantly longer than average. The concept of “Blue Zones” was introduced by researchers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain to describe areas with exceptional longevity. Other recognized Blue Zones include Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), and Ikaria (Greece). As of 1 January 2023, the island had approximately 400 centenarians among its 350,000 residents, equating to about 114 centenarians per 100,000 people.
