Burgess Miles Gadsden aka “Papa”
December 18, 1918 - November 18, 2025
On November 18th, one month shy of his 107th birthday, Papa closed his eyes for the last time.
I’ve struggled to find the words to update family and friends… but as folks reach out to see what the plans are for his birthday I know something needs to be shared. Perhaps with time finding the “right” words will be easier.
This man… the one who taught my to change my oil, how to fish, chop firewood and instilled a love of the outdoors in me. The man who sat patiently as I pretended to cut his hair (only to become his personal barber later in life as of course he never paid for a haircut and wouldn’t stop growing hair!), and was the first one to let me bake a cake unsupervised. He will be missed.
As a child, my weekends with my grandparents were gold to me. They meant a freedom from struggles and the opportunity to be a kid. I would leave the school of a Friday afternoon and quickly scan the street corner in hopes that Papa would be there, leaning up against the hood of the car with one arm stretched high above his head in a long and exaggerated wave. Most weeks the camper would be loaded on the truck already and we would head for the hills as soon as Nanny was done work. A weekend of fishing the streams and hiking through abandoned mine shafts was the perfect reset.
Born in 1918 in “Hardy Bay”, raised in Bella Coola. The last remaining of 9 children, his stories will fill the Christmas table gatherings for years to come.
He loved us all… and taught us to love and care for each other.
I’m sorry for throwing your green jacket in the garbage so many times Papa, but Nanny really hated it… and given how many times it kept reappearing I suspect you were really playing along with my nine year old antics.
Give Nanny a big squeeze for me.
