Blažena Strachotová, the oldest living person in Czech Republic, passed away on 28 September, at the age of 108 years, 231 days. Her passing was first reported by iDNES.cz.
Strachotová was born in Slavičín, Zlín Region, Czech Republic, on 9 February 1917. After finishing elementary school, she began training as a butcher in Valašské Meziříčí, where after eight years she qualified as a saleswoman of meat and smoked products. Upon her return from Valašské Meziříčí, she became acquainted with Jaroslav Strachota (1913–1977), who, like her, came from Slavičín. In September 1938, Jaroslav was drafted into the Czechoslovak Army but returned home shortly after the signing of the Munich Agreement. The couple married in 1939.
They inherited the local soda factory, founded in 1919 by Jaroslav’s father, Oswald Strachota. The business prospered during the Second World War. The couple had two sons, Jan and Jaroslav. Following the Communist coup, the Strachota soda factory was nationalized in 1950, forcing the couple to move first to Ostrava and later to Brno in search of new work. In 1977, they relocated to České Budějovice. That same year, on 9 November, her husband Jaroslav passed away.
On 8 July 2024, following the death of 107-year-old Filomena Kolomazníková, she became the oldest known living person in the Czech Republic.
