The woman believed to be the oldest person in Ireland has died just a few months after celebrating her 109th birthday.
Phyllis Furness died in Galway yesterday evening, after celebrating her 109th birthday on 23 May at Moycullen nursing home.
Born Phyllis Olwyn Ryder in Nottinghamshire in England, she moved with her husband John to the Glann Road outside Oughterard in 1981 as a retirement project.

She is the 11th oldest person in history to die in Ireland, her successor is the 20th, 2nd oldest UK-born person to die in Ireland, the second oldest person in history to die in Galway, the oldest person now from Galway is Martin McEvilly born on 26 July 1916 and the 33rd oldest person in the history of Ireland. He was the oldest person in Ireland since 17 Jan 2024 (208 days), longest since Mairin Hughes who was from 26 Aug 2022 to 6 Sept 2023 (1 yr, 11 days) who also died older than Phyllis (109 years, 107 days)
