Translation of her Biography from Bulgarian to English. (Published on 31 January 2023 in Death Report).
Grandma Nurie Dermendzhieva from the Smolyan village of Srednogortsi passed away on January 12 of this year. 110 years old. This was reported by her relatives to "Bulgaria Dnes". The super-centenarian died peacefully in her sleep while she was with her two daughters.
Dermendzhieva was born on October 12, 1912, which makes her a true record holder for our latitudes.
"We are very sad, we miss her very much. Grandma Nuriye was a very good and nice person. I am the eldest daughter-in-law and I have only seen good from her. She helped us a lot. For children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
Grandma Nuriye could do it for a long time and she didn't give up," Muyune, the husband of the old woman's eldest son, Ramadan, painfully told the newspaper.
For more than a century, Dermendzhieva has never said a bad word to anyone. Nuriye grew up with many sisters and brothers in the village of Madan in Dubovo. She got married at the age of 16, her husband Redzep being only 13 at the time. The young bride waits for her lover to come of age and gives birth to the first of a total of 6 children. She raises her heirs almost alone.
Her husband died of silicosis (an occupational disease caused by inhaling quartz) in 1952. He was then only 36 years old. At that time, the family lived in the village of Rustan, which today is completely depopulated. Little by little, the family members moved to the municipalities of Madan, Rudozem and Smolyan, where they built houses. And grandmother Nuriye began to visit them for a month on a rotating basis. Of all her children, the old lady has 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
The heirs admit that they had the most difficult time 5 years ago, when they had to consider whether to have surgery because of progressive blindness. Together they decided to go to the hospital, even though he might not survive the operation. The centenarian has been unable to see with both eyes for years due to cataracts. After the intervention, a miracle happens. Baba Nuriye not only survives the operation, but also regains much of her sight.
"She didn't stop, she was so lively. She always helped us. She didn't stay in one place. The last 2-3 months she started giving up. Finally she couldn't speak, she wanted to say something, but she couldn't," adds the eldest her daughter-in-law.
Nuriye lives in the village. All her life she worked in the fields and picked tobacco, grew potatoes and beans. She always ate cow's milk and homemade butter. Since her family has many children, she has never held a government job in order to have time to raise the children. He retired as a farmer, but continued to be active almost until his last breath, helping relatives and acquaintances. This is also the reason why the cemetery park was filled with people at the funeral two weeks ago.
Over 100 people go to say their last goodbye to the supercentenarian. According to unofficial information, Grandma Nurie is the second longest-lived Bulgarian woman in history. The first place is held by Karamfila Stoyanova (1903-2014, who lived 110 years and 264 days).
