María Branyas Morera - of Olot, Catalonia, Spain - sadly passed away yesterday, on 19 August 2024, at the age of 117 years, 168 days. She was born on 4 March 1907 (or 1 April 1907, according to ESO), in San Francisco, California, United States.

https://twitter.com/MariaBranyas112/status/1825824972725502093

She held the title of World's Oldest Person since Lucile Randon's death on 17 January 2023. She was the oldest Spanish (and Catalan) person ever, and the 8th-oldest validated person in history.

We'll always remember her for her outstanding elegance, gracefulness and kindness, even in extreme old age. May she rest in peace.🖤

Some of the reports coming through are suggesting 19 August, though this will obviously become clearer soon.

Maria Branyas, world's oldest person, dies aged 117

Catalan born in San Francisco had memories of First World War and was 8th longest-lived person in history

Maria Branyas, the world's oldest person, passed away on Monday aged 117 years.

The Catalan, born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907, had been living in the nursing home Santa Maria del Tura in the northern Catalan town of Olot for the last two decades.

Last month, Branyas became the 8th longest-lived person in history according to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), which supervises the Guinness Oldest People list.

She became the oldest person in the world on January 17, 2023, when French Luciple Randon passed away, aged 118.

Memories of First World War

Born on March 4, 1907, to a Catalan family in San Francisco, California, Branyas moved to Catalonia as a young child and has memories dating far back to World War I as well as the Spanish Civil War.

When her mother decided to return to Catalonia with her family including 7-year-old Maria, the world was at war. It was 1914, and in an interview with Catalan News in 2019, Branyas still remembered their long journey by ship.

“We came here on a boat. Because of the war, Germany was still attacking the North, and you couldn’t go through the northern seas, but we could go further down, through the Azores and Cuba,” she said. “In 1914 I was already a bit aware [of what was happening],” Branyas adds in a slow, but firm tone.

Indeed, she recalled both world wars: “They were very harmful in Europe, but they also brought some advances.”

She also had fresh memories of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). “I have very bad memories of it, some people rose up and started to commit atrocities when no one was talking about it.”

Many years later, in May 2020, Branyas became the oldest known person to survive Covid-19 at the age of 113.

San Francisco commemoration

San Francisco's Board of Supervisors has officially commended Catalan Maria Branyas, the world's oldest known living person, aged 116 years and 249 days.

Branyas has been living in a nursing home in Olot since 2000, when she was transferred after contracting pneumonia. There, she thrives as "an active and engaged resident, continuing to perform exercises until her deteriorated mobility," the text reads.

The resolution read by the speaker of the board, Aaron Peskin, on Tuesday also declares November 7, 2023 as 'Maria Branyas Day' in the city and local county.

The text also praises all that the Catalan woman "has to teach at this critical moment in our planet's history on how to live with integrity, love, humanity, and hope."

At her age, Branyas "continues to inspire the world with her longevity, perseverance, good humor, quick wit, vast institutional knowledge, verve and deep wisdom earned from a life well-lived," the text reads.

@chrisr Entirely possible, as the only source I've seen so far is the Twitter post, which did not mention the time of death; hence I included "presumably" in the post. I'll edit it now to reflect the report.

Rest in peace María Branyas Morera.

When I saw her last tweet days ago I had a very bad feeling...

117 years and 168 days is an incredible age.

With her sad death the year 1907 ends.

She was the last person who was a supercentenarian when I joined the 110 club on March 10, 2017 (Maria Branyas Morera was just 110 years and 6 days old)

Kane Tanaka (1903-2022) my favorite supercentenarian of all time.

Very sad news. She was a very iconic SC for me. I knew her since her 110th birthday, back in 2017, and since then I have been following her, celebrating all her longevity achievements (like becoming the oldest person ever to live in Spain or the WOLP). She was a very smart and intelligent lady. She was very special for me.

Rest in peace, María. You had a wonderful long life. Hasta siempre. Descansa en pau.

very sad news, but at the same time I am glad that she was able to enjoy her life to the fullest and has lived to be 117 years old, I had hopes that she would make it to the year 2025, unfortunately that was not destined, with her death we are now there are only 6 people left born before 1910, the 1907 cohort becomes part of history and now the new doyenne is Tomiko Itooka.
RIP Maria Branyas (1907-2024)

The world's oldest person has gone back to Japan again. 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka could expect to be named as the new world's oldest person now by Guinness World Records. GRG validated her age so she obviously has a chance.

One of the most mentally fit supercentenarians. It's touching that yesterday before she passed away she said goodbye to all of us. My condolences.

Through her vast amount of tweets and many articles, we knew Maria's personality more than the largest majority of other SCs, so I think we all felt like we knew her quite well, and for quite a few years (for the people that have followed her for longer); she had quite a presence here, and the fact that she was mentally sharp and physically strong until the end adds to this. The loss of Maria's everlasting presence leaves quite a whole in the heart of this community. I am sad that we will no longer see what she has to say

Rest in Peace, María Branyas Morera (4 March 1907 - 19 August 2024)

Excepting undiscovered cases, Jeanne Calment will now retain the WOPE title until at least 3 Nov 2030, a span of 40 years 175 days.
