Elizabeth Wiseman, Mississippi’s Oldest Resident, Dies at 110

Elizabeth Wiseman (née Woods), a resident of Olive Branch, Mississippi, passed away on 17 May, at the age of 110 years, 78 days. Her passing was first reported by KAIT and DeSoto County News.

Elizabeth Wiseman was born in Olive Branch, on 28 February 1915, as the fourth of seven children born to parents Clufus Woods and Delia Watson. She attended Botts Chapel School until the 8th grade, where she developed foundational skills in reading, writing, and math. A woman of deep faith, she became a devoted member of Hurts Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of 12, when she first confessed her belief in the Lord.

On 16 November 1936, at 21, she married Walter Wiseman. Her husband worked as both a farmer and a truck driver, while Elizabeth supported him on the farm. Together, they raised seven children—four daughters and three sons. Elizabeth always encouraged her children to pursue higher education, and all of them successfully achieved this goal.

On 14 September 2024, she possibly became Mississippi’s oldest living resident, following the passing of Mary Lois Burkett.
