LongeviQuest in Paris for 16th Supercentenarian Seminar

Earlier this month, LongeviQuest researchers Guillaume Legris and Jimmy Lindberg attended the 16th Supercentenarian Seminar hosted in Paris.

The researchers presented findings on four of the earliest known verifiable centenarians, all of whom lived during the 1600s or earlier. Their presentations included a variety of documentation and reconstructed family trees, along with discussions of potential issues related to the age claims.

You can read about some of the centenarians discussed here: Searching for the first (verifiable) centenarian, which includes individuals such as Gershom Rice (1667?–1768), who lived in what would later become the United States, and Martha Thomlinson (ca. 1668?–1769) of England.

Do note that additional, potentially earlier centenarians were discussed, and there is an intention to publish research on them at a later date.

Researcher Jimmy Lindberg also presented posters on work conducted on Eliza Underwood (1866?/67–1981), who at the time of her death was the oldest known person of all time. In addition, Lindberg presented a poster on the familial longevity of relatives of Swedish semi‑supercentenarians, finding evidence that these relatives tend to live longer than the general Swedish population.

LongeviQuest was pleased to participate and we thank the INED and the International Database on Longevity for hosting the event.

She moved to Tallassee, Alabama, as a young child and settled there. For many years, she worked as a housekeeper at a local hospital, retiring around the age of 60.

Even in her later years as a centenarian, she was known to enjoy reading Christian books, shopping, taking walks, and spending time with family and friends. When asked about the secret to her longevity, she credited her faith, saying it came from putting God first in everything she did and praying every day.

Her birthday was first reported by the Facebook page Conociendo a Puerto Rico, which frequently features stories about Puerto Rico’s oldest citizens.

Ynés María de Jesús Garay was born in the Rincón neighborhood of Cayey, Puerto Rico, on 20 April 1915 to parents Eugenio De Jesús Cartagena and Juana Garay Tirado. At the age of 10, her family moved to the Pasto Viejo neighborhood, where she spent her adolescent years. She left school in the third grade, and began working in tobacco farming – then a booming industry in Puerto Rico – at the age of 13.

After her first marriage ended in divorce, she married Domingo Colón Ortiz in 1939. The couple would have 11 children together, and both earned a living working in a factory, where their job was to strip tobacco leaves. The family owned a farm, where they would grow crops such as sweet potato, avocado, and corn, and owned livestock which included cows, pigs, and goats. Her husband died in 1983, after 44 years of marriage.

At the moment, she is the second-oldest known living person in Puerto Rico, after the anonymous lady who turned 112 in February.

Happy 111th Birthday!
