Denmark's oldest person holds on to both Christmas and life

Kirsten Schwalbe is approaching 112 years old. This year, her biggest Christmas wish is world peace, and she hopes to write Danish history in the new year.

It is always a warm welcome that meets you when you step through the door of Denmark's oldest person. Because even though Kirsten Schwalbe is slowly approaching 112 years old, she is still lively and full of life.

She still lives on her own and manages without too much help in everyday life, and she dreams of doing so for a long time to come.

- I hope that I can break the record next year, she says with a little laugh.

The record she is referring to is the title of 'Denmark's oldest ever', who has lived her entire life in Denmark. Kirsten Schwalbe can boast of that if she is still here on October 11 next year.

I guess so, the senior president says promptly.

- It's actually strange to think about how much I've experienced since I turned 100. It's strange, she says with a smile and a slight shake of her head.

Christmas traditions and memories

We've come to visit for Christmas. To talk about Christmas traditions, memories and wishes.

And one of Kirsten's regular traditions has always been to bake vanilla wreaths.

- I've done that every single Christmas. There must have been several thousand, she says.

So she also has a recipe lying around. In a book from 1952, which we throw ourselves into together, to make sure that the Christmas tradition is still alive.

Because it's just not the same if they're not homemade.

The ones you buy don't taste like anything. It's just not the same, she says.
