Thanks you for setting up this thread, dear @mrcatlord. Having energetic person like you is great for the fan community.

Happy belated 112th birthday, Mr. Gisaburo Sonobe! It is said that Italian living woman Ines Sommovigo is also shared the birthday with him.

What is really noteworthy about him as a Japanese is that, after anonymous man of Tokyo, who was said to be born in July or August 1912, entered to a limbo case in July 2023 (Source: https://www.city.shinagawa.tokyo.jp/con ... 02308c.xls) Sonobe became the last Japanese man who was born in Meiji era of Japan.

Happy birthday Mr Sonobe.

112 is still a very significant male achievement.

Beat wishes to the 3rd WOLM.

He's the 3rd oldest validated living man, but likely not the 3rd oldest in terms of documented cases.

Today 15 November 2023 marks a one year anniversary since he titled as Japan's oldest living man following the passing of Shigeru Nakamura.

I can not find any sources. Tateyama city where he lives is only publishes not so detailed monthly stastics https://www.city.tateyama.chiba.jp/jouhou/page100257.html unlike Nara city where Mikizo Ueda lived. So it is not possible to check whether he is alive or dead every month. Details about him rarely appear in Japanese news. He is a similer case as Masamitsu Yoshida (1904 - 2016) who is little known about him.

Someone made a find-a-grave for Sonobe although it is probably a hoax

@mrcatlord Even though findagrave is infanous in Japan, I don't think it would be reported by Japanese people faster than others, and I think it's false information.

Maybe created by troll who recently vandalize 2 forums. Or confused him with Tsuneji Oyama.

I'm really hoping he's still alive but it's likely a hoax since no one is talking about his death

Hello, I want to inform you all that the death of Gisabruo Sonobe was thankfully a hoax. A user commented on Aquanaut's YouTube post and confirmed he tracked the person who created the fake find a Grave for him.

I'm surprised that the Gerontology Wiki says he's currently 3rd oldest living man, not 2nd place after JVPM. Well, it would be a shock to thousands of longevity fans in Japan to learn that Gisaburo Sonobe might not be the next WOM. One of my Japanese friends worried that the Japanese had no chance of winning the WOLM title again because the South American men are very strong.

Today, Mr. Sonobe become the 10th oldest Japanese man ever, with an age of 112 years and 121 days, tieing the age of Mikizo Ueda (1910 - 2022). Congratulations!

I might be wrong, but it appears he hasn't been confirmed alive yet for his 112th birthday. According to LQ & GRG, he was last confirmed alive on 19 September 2023. Perhaps his 112th birthday was confirmed alive privately

@aquanaut I spoke to you before that his 112th birthday must have been confirmed privately as GRG changed his age number on the website

GRG has not independently confirmed he reached 112. As there has not been an obituary or any confirmation of his passing, we decided to upgrade to 112 after his birthday. But if this turns out to be incorrect and he actually passed between 111 and 112, we will of course rectify this. LQ may have confirmed he is living however, I don't know.

@olliegrg LQ may have done the same thing, as his page says he's 112, but the last update was June 2023

THI1908 provides source at Japan forum that Gisaburo Sonobe is reaching 112. https://www.city.tateyama.chiba.jp/hisyo/page100121.html

End of discussion as the city's announcement clearly states that he reached 112!
