Maria Farrugia was born in Hamrun, Malta, then a British colony on 7 March 1912. Her mother lived to be 100. She had four siblings. One of her siblings was killed by a bomb during one of Malta’s very first air raids at the age of 37.
On 8 December 2021 at the age of 109 years, 276 days, she surpassed the age of Ms. Galea, becoming the oldest known person ever in Malta.
