Luz María Quesada García, Venezuela’s Oldest Woman, Turns 110

Luz María Quesada García, the oldest known living woman in Venezuela, celebrated her 110th birthday on 7 January. Although her actual birthday is today, her family held a celebration a day earlier at her residence in Araure, in the state of Portuguesa.

Luz María Quesada García was born in (Santa Ana de) Coro, Falcón, Venezuela, on 8 January 1916, daughter of Rafael Quesada and Juana Inocencia García.

She married Orlando Pelayo Granadillo (born 1923). Around the time they married in the mid-1940s, her husband began working at the Shell company in Cardón. He later found employment at Cervecería Regional and relocated to Punto Fijo. The couple had five children: Ana Inocencia (1951), Orlando Antonio (1952), Rubén Darío (1954), Pedro Vicente ‘Chente’ (1956), and Lope Rafael (1958). At some point, the family moved to Maracay.

In 1964, her husband served as one of the construction supervisors for the Acarigua-Araure Central Hospital. That same year, he was involved in the reconstruction of the Araure church. He passed away in Araure on 2 June 1990.

At the moment, Luz María is the second-oldest validated living person in Venezuela, after Pedro María Molina Márquez.
