Lefroy Brownlow Place was the oldest person in Bermuda, born on 24 July 1916 and died on 23 July 2024 and is considered the oldest man in the country's history. He was the oldest person in Bermuda since 26 Jan 2023 (1 yr, 179 days), the longest since Winnifred Childs stayed (4 yrs, 266 days) and died on 3 May 2021, he is the first man to be considered the oldest person there, and the second oldest person in the history of Bermuda, only second to her predecessor Myrtle Edness, dead at 108 years, 193 days.
Does anyone know who the oldest person and man in Bermuda is now?
He died one day before his 108th birthday? Very sad. 🙁 May he RIP. 🙁
Leona Thompson, the oldest living person in the British overseas territory of Bermuda, celebrated her 108th birthday in St. George’s on 11 April, according to Bermuda Broadcasting.
Thompson was born on 11 April 1917. She grew up near Tobacco Bay in St. George’s as the youngest of five sisters. Her late husband, Walter Thompson, was a painter and interior decorator. They met when he was hired to paint her sister’s house. Though he was 13 years her senior and she was around 21 at the time, they didn’t marry until she was 25. The couple shared 54 years of marriage before his passing in 1996.
She spent her life to working as a housekeeper, serving the Stallard family for over 50 years. She also worked as a tour guide at St. Peter’s Church in St. George’s, where she made many lasting friendships. She credited her long life to God.
Thompson is only the second known person in Bermuda’s history to celebrate a 108th birthday, following Myrtle Edness (1914–2023). On 23 July 2024, she became the oldest known living resident in Bermuda, following the passing of 107-year-old Lefroy Brownlow Place.
Happy 108th Birthday!
