Else Tostmann, the oldest living person in Germany, recently passed away in Adenstedt, Lower Saxony, at the age of 112.
Tostmann was born in Adenstedt, on 20 October 1913. She was baptized and confirmed in Adenstedt.
In 1939, she married Heinrich Tostmann. According to her, the most terrible experience of her life was a low-level attack over Adenstedt in 1944 during World War II, while she held her daughter Helga in her arms. Her husband never returned from the war. She initially worked in agriculture but later discovered her passion for cooking. According to her daughter, there was hardly a house in the village where she didn’t cook for parties during that time.
She was believed to have become the nation’s oldest living resident around June 2025 and was the last known person in Germany born in 1913.

She died at 112 years, 74 days, the youngest in that position since Adele Rodenstein, who died on July 18, 2020, at 111 years, 319 days.

She was buried January 3 2026. In German countries it is exceptional rarely that a person´s obituary is only one day after the death. In a coffin mostly three days later and in an urn a week/10 days later.
It has now been confirmed by Georg Fuerholzer that Else did die on 2 January, she just had her funeral one day later, rather than just waiting a few weeks/months. This post needs updating to 2026 page. She was buried January 3 2026. In German countries it is exceptional rarely that a person´s obituary is only one day after the death.
