Gangamma, possibly the oldest living person in Fiji, passed away in the village of Solovi, near Nadi, on 14 January, at the claimed age of 110 years, 181 days, according to the Fiji Sun.
A direct descendant of the Girmitiyas—the labourers from British India brought to Fiji to work on plantations—she claimed to have been born in the town of Ba on 17 July 1915. She was married in Nadi at the age of 14 to Veera Sami. She was known as a deeply spiritual woman who lived by strong values. Influenced by her family background, she embraced both Christianity and South Indian cultural traditions, as her father-in-law was a missionary from India.
Widowed at the age of 48, she raised her six children on her own, working tirelessly on the farm to support her family. In later years, she became a familiar and respected presence at the Nadi temple, where she assisted the priest and helped wherever she was needed. During the construction of the new Nadi temple, she cooked daily for the workers building the place of worship.
Her lifelong contributions were nationally recognised when she received the 50th Anniversary of Independence Commemorative Medal at State House in Suva during the visit of the President of India to Fiji.
As of January 2026, no supercentenarians born in or deceased in Fiji have been documented with sufficient evidence to verify their claimed ages. Consequently, the identity of the country’s oldest living resident, as well as its potential oldest person ever, remains unknown.
