Mijo Martinović, the oldest known living man in Bosnia and Herzegovina, unfortunately fell and broke his hip. He was operated on 21 October 2022 at the SKB Mostar. The surgery was a success and doctors said he has the potential to walk again.

At the age of 105, he is also the oldest patient ever operated on in SKB Mostar and in the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Previously, the oldest operated patient in Bosnia and Herzegovina was Dragoljub Galić (1909-2018), who at the age of 104 underwent heart surgery and was then implanted with a pacemaker.

In a few days, Mijo Martinović should be discharged from the hospital. Until now, he lived alone and took care of himself completely, who will take care of him now is unknown, probably his daughter who lives in the same village and is more than 80 years old.

Unfortunately, Mijo Martinović was unable to cope with the consequences caused by the right hip fracture and surgery. Martinović died on 12 November 2022 at the age of 105 years and 60 days.

Translation into English:

Supercentenarian: Jovan Jovanović still holds the record as the oldest person who ever died in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Will Ajka Lokmić threaten him?

Supercentenarian Jovan Jovanović still holds the record as the oldest person who ever died in Bosnia and Herzegovina - at the age of 110.

Gerontological Center Sarajevo announced today to the public that Jovanović, who was a beneficiary of this institution, still holds this record. He was born on 16 September 1906 in the village of Donji Brčeli in Montenegro. On his 110th birthday in 2016, he became the first supercentenarian to ever live in BiH. Just 15 days after his 110th birthday, Jovanović died.

In addition to being the oldest person in BiH, he is known for having published more than 200 scientific articles. Even in the same year that he died, an article was published in "Sarajevo Notebooks" in 2016.

On 13 October of this year, the Gerontology Research Group officially confirmed his age based on the documentation that the Gerontological Center Sarajevo has and mostly obtained from the archives. Jovanović, who was written about by local, regional and even world media, was posthumously declared the oldest person ever in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In December 1943, he married Zagorka, with whom he never had children, and moved to BiH in 1944. He became a professor of Russian language and philosophy. Until 1957, he worked in the university library, where he remained until his retirement. Unfortunately, Zagorka passed away in 1973.

He still holds the record as the oldest person who ever died in BiH, and his record could be broken in the middle of 2024 by Ajka Lokmić from Sarajevo, born on 4 May 1914, who is still alive.
