Denise Waelbers (108) is de oudste inwoner van het land: "Dat gaan we vieren met een taartje en champagne!"

De 108-jarige Denise Waelbers is nu de oudste inwoner van het land. Dat heeft de European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO) bevestigd. Waelbers werd op 26 september 1915 geboren in Lommel (Limburg), maar woont al jarenlang in het Antwerpse Mortsel. "Ze is nog erg helder en actief", vertelt de burgemeester. Denise zelf is heel verbaasd, als we haar aan de telefoon krijgen: "Ik schrik er wel van!"

Met de hulp van buurvrouw Monique Van den Broeck, die elke dag voor haar zorgt, kunnen we Denise even bellen. Ze geloven het eerst niet. "Ik ben ervan geschrokken. Ik wist dat er nog een oude vrouw voor mij was, maar die hoefde nu voor mij niet te sterven, hoor! Gaan ze nu iets organiseren voor mij?"

Burgemeester Erik Broeckx (N-VA) kent haar in elk geval al goed. "Ze zal erg blij zijn om dit nieuws te vernemen, want ze keek hier erg naar uit", vertelt hij. "Ik breng haar sinds ze 100 is elk jaar een bezoekje op haar verjaardag, en het toeval wil dat we op dezelfde dag jarig zijn. We vieren dus samen feest!"

"Denise is nog heel helder van geest en ze is ook nog erg actief. Ze woont nog alleen, aan de winkelstraat Statielei, en ze krijgt ondersteuning van haar geweldige buurvrouw. Ze maakt ook nog geregeld een uitstapje naar een café aan de overkant. Ze geniet dus nog van het leven."

Dat bewijzen de vrouwen ook aan de telefoon. "We gaan dat vieren met een taartje en champagne", klinkt het. 

 

Denise gaat nog graag een Leffe drinken in het café aan de overkant

Pastoor Tom Schellekens kent Denise ook al verschillende jaren en bevestigt dat het nog een erg levenslustige vrouw is. "Via mijn parochianen kwam ik te weten dat een van de oudste vrouwen van het land - ze was toen 102 - bij ons in de buurt woont en ze vonden dat ik haar eens een bezoekje moest brengen. Toen ik aanbelde en niemand de deur opende, veronderstelde ik meteen dat ze misschien te hardhorend was om de deurbel te horen. Tot ik van haar buren te horen kreeg dat Denise in het café aan de overkant van de straat zat. Ze zat er een Leffe te drinken. En dat deed ze blijkbaar wel vaker."

Sindsdien bezoekt Schellekens haar regelmatig. "Maar als je het haar vraagt, doe ik dat nog veel te weinig", lacht de pastoor. Wat haar geheim is voor een lang, gelukkig en gezond leven? "Geen enkel idee", geeft Schellekens toe. "Maar ik heb een vermoeden dat ze het zelf ook niet goed weet. Ze heeft nooit kinderen gehad, dus ze heeft ook geen kleinkinderen. Wat ik wel zeker weet, is dat Denise een zeer gedreven en vooral sterke dame is."

Zo is ze ook van plan om samen met haar buurvrouw te gaan stemmen op 9 juni. Net zoals ook al de 107-jarige Jos Kets uit Berlaar zich heeft voorgenomen. 

Waelbers volgt Fernande Courtoy op die dinsdag in een rusthuis in Henegouwen overleed op 109-jarige leeftijd. 

Pastoor Schellekens gaat regelmatig op bezoek bij Denise.

Benedictus “Louis” Bellens died on the 28th May 2024 in Geel, Antwerp, at the age of 107 years and 192 days. He was born on the 18th November 1916 and was the doyen of Belgium and the last surviving Belgian man born before 1917. He is succeeded by Alfons Leempoels (born 1st January 1917). Coincidentally, he died on the same day as the doyenne of Belgium, Fernande Courtoy.

This is not a good time for Belgium
