Tadeusz Lutak, Poland’s Oldest Man, Turns 108

Tadeusz Lutak, a resident of Strzyżów, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland, and the nation’s oldest man, celebrated his 108th birthday on 29 August. His birthday was first reported by Nowiny 24.

Tadeusz Lutak was born in the village of Żarnowa in Podkarpackie Voivodeship, on 29 August 1917. After finishing primary school, he joined the army. On 25 November 1937, he was assigned to the Non-Commissioned Officers’ School in the 2nd Armored Battalion in Żurawica. In September 1938, after completing the school, he was assigned to a Vickers tank company as a motorcycle courier. That same year, he participated in the Polish takeover of Cieszyn Silesia, Orava, and Spiš.

During the Polish Defensive War of September 1939, he fought with the 121st Light Tank Company of the 10th Cavalry Brigade, including in the Battle of Jordanów. He served as a motorcycle courier between brigade commander Col. Stanisław Maczek and company commander Lt. Stanisław Rączkowski.

He was captured by the Germans near Biłgoraj or Stary Dzików, but escaped from a train transport near Pilzno. In spring 1940, he worked on building a German tunnel shelter near Żarnowska Góra, to avoid deportation for forced labor. In 1941, he narrowly avoided execution, was forced into a Wehrmacht auxiliary unit, but escaped within two months and returned home on foot with five companions.

Following the death of 108-year-old Władysław Fidos (5 October 1915 – 26 July 2024), he became the oldest known living man in Poland.
