Mr. Takayoshi Kanda of Hilo, Hawaii (USA) recently celebrated his 108th birthday.

He was born on 19 January 1918.

It appears he and his 104-year-old brother Tokuo Kanda (born on 16 May 1921) are still alive, making them amongst the oldest living male siblings in the world.

Hawai’i’s oldest man, 108, celebrated for a life of service

A 108-year-old Hawaiʻi resident believed to be the state’s oldest living man is being honored for a lifetime marked by quiet service, resilience and remembrance.

Takayoshi Kanda, born in 1918 when Hawaiʻi was still a U.S. territory, has lived through some of the most defining moments in the islands’ history, including the Great Depression, World War II and statehood. His story was shared by Martha and Elliott Khlopin of Get2insurance.com with John Veneri on Living808.

Kanda grew up in plantation-era Hawaiʻi, where families worked long hours and community values such as discipline, respect and responsibility were central to daily life. Those early experiences shaped what those close to him describe as a lifelong commitment to helping others without seeking recognition.

One of the most enduring aspects of Kanda’s legacy is his devotion to the Waiākea Clock Memorial in Hilo, which honors the victims of the 1960 Hilo tsunami. The disaster claimed the lives of 61 people, including Kanda’s father. For decades afterward, Kanda quietly maintained the memorial, placing two bouquets of flowers there each week.

According to family members, Kanda explained the two bouquets were meant to ensure that no one remembered there would ever feel alone.

Now living on Oʻahu, Kanda remains known for his humility. Though he was recently recognized by the Mayor of Honolulu in honor of his 108th birthday, he has consistently downplayed his role, saying he simply did what he believed was right.
