Virgilio Dávalos Rey, Paraguay’s Oldest Person, Dies at 111
Virgilio Dávalos Rey, the oldest living person in Paraguay, passed away today in Coronel Oviedo on 28 February, at the age of 111 years, 143 days, according to ABC Color.
Virgilio Dávalos Rey was born in the rural town of Plácido, on the outskirts of Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazu Department, Paraguay, on 8 October 1914.
During the Chaco War (1932–1935), he served in various military roles, including logistics in the War Intendancy, naval inspections along the Pilcomayo River, and later in Infantry Regiment No. 10 “Sauce.” Illness forced him to leave the front, and the war left him partially deaf and with impaired vision. After recovering, he worked in the military quartermaster’s office, using his self-taught skills in writing and mathematics. He eventually returned to his home community, where he learned from his brother that the war had ended.
In September 1940, he married María Santa López Martínez, with whom he had six daughters. They shared 76 years of marriage until María Santa’s death in June 2017.

He is the 3rd oldest person in Paraguayan history, the 2nd oldest man.
He was the oldest person in the country since July 22, 2022 (3 years, 221 days), the longest time since 2013, surpassing Victoriana Ramirez who was between November 5, 2013 and October 24, 2016 (2 years, 354 days).
Age: He was the oldest in the position since Aura Victoria Lobo de Bendlin, who died at 111 years, 217 days on July 28, 2019.
Location: First person from Caaguazu to be the oldest person in Paraguay since 2013.
He was also the oldest man in Paraguay since July 22, 2022, the longest time since Silverio Pereira Ayala, who was from November 5, 2013 to May 30, 2018 (4 years, 206 days) and died at [age missing]. 111 years, 353 days, being the oldest person to hold this title.
Also the first man from Caaguazu to be the oldest living man in Paraguay.
He is the 137th validated oldest man of all time.
