Brazilian Supercentenarian Nair Dias Turns 111

Nair Dias, a resident of Campanha, Minas Gerais, Brazil, is celebrating her 111th birthday today.

Nair Dias was born in Campanha, on 17 November 1914, to parents Joaquim Messias Dias (died 1976) and Anna Augusta da Fonseca (died 1920). She had one sibling from this union, Lígia Fonseca Dias (1919-1983). Her father remarried on 5 July 1922, and Nair gained half-siblings from this union. She was employed at the Post Office.

Nair has been voting since the first election in which Brazilian women gained the right to vote in 1932 and continued to do so even in her centenarian years. At the age of 99, she commented: “I will vote until I die. If I am in a wheelchair, I will. I love my country, I love my city.”

She currently lives with her two living half-sisters; Maria Olinda Marcondes Dias (b. 13 September 1925) and Lydia Marcondes Dias (b. 23 May 1929).
