Rosa Laura Torres Barra, a resident of Tomé, Biobío Region, Chile, turns 112 today. She is the nation’s oldest known resident. She initially claimed to have been born on 11 January, but research has since confirmed that her actual birthdate was six months later. Today, her family has provided us with an update on her current status.
Torres Barra was born in Tomé on 20 July 1913, as one of a set of twins to parents José Santos Torres Cabrera and Ernestina Barra Soto. Her twin, Rosa Ester, was born 30 minutes after her but died at a very young age.
Torres Barra worked at Bellavista Oveja Tomé Factory, dedicated to the textile industry, for more than 40 years. She never married but had two children: Sonia and Héctor.
On 17 November 2024, following the passing of 112-year-old Aída Pizarro Serrano, she became the oldest (known) living person in Chile.

Happy 112th Birthday!
