Virgilio Dávalos Rey, the oldest known living man in Paraguay, is celebrating his claimed 111th birthday today in Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazu
Virgilio Dávalos Rey was born in the rural town of Plácido, on the outskirts of Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazu Department, on 8 October 1914. He was the fourth of six children born to parents Remigio Dávalos and Lorenza Rey. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in reading, the arts, and culture. After primary school, he moved from Ajos to Villarrica to continue his education, as his hometown lacked secondary schools.
During the Chaco War (1932–1935), he served in various military roles, including logistics in the War Intendancy, naval inspections along the Pilcomayo River, and later in Infantry Regiment No. 10 “Sauce.” Illness forced him to leave the front, and the war left him partially deaf and with impaired vision. After recovering, he worked in the military quartermaster’s office, using his self-taught skills in writing and mathematics. He eventually returned to his home community, where he learned from his brother that the war had ended.
At some point, he married Teresa Lopez de Davalos, with whom he had six daughters: Tomasa, Nimia, Francisca, Apolonia, Dominga, and Sara. After the war, he settled in his native Plácido, where he focused on trading local fruits, tobacco, petitgrain essence, and buying and selling cattle, among other activities.
As of October 2025, his age has not been officially validated by LongeviQuest
Happy Birthday!
