When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

Italian Woman Carla Pietrasanta Turns 110

Carla Pietrasanta, a resident of Milan, Lombardy, Italy, celebrated her 110th birthday yesterday, according to Sesto Notizie.

Carla Pietrasanta was born in the ward of Affori in Milan, Lombardy, Italy, on 27 August 1916. She was born into a family of artisans. She spent her youth in Milan, balancing school and work. She studied and worked in the areas around Porta Genova and Porta Ticinese. She married in early 1942, but the bombings that devastated Milan during World War II took her husband from her. Their son, however, survived and was born in April 1943.

After the war, she remarried and had a second child. At the age of 90, she faced another difficult loss: the death of her daughter. Shortly before her 100th birthday, she received the happy news that her first great-grandchild was on the way.

As of her 109th birthday, she had three grandchildren. A birthday celebration was held at the nursing home where she lived, where she celebrated alongside a fellow resident, Violetta, who turned 101 the following day. Carla still enjoyed reading, even without her glasses.

At the moment, she is the second-oldest living person in Lombardy, after Angela Luigia Ventura, who turned 110 on 23 August.
