When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

Carmen Burguera Dávila, a resident of Mérida City, Mérida, Venezuela, celebrated her 110th birthday on 12 June, as confirmed by her family.
Burguera Dávila was born on 12 June 1916 in Tovar, Mérida, Venezuela. She completed her early education at the Colegio La Presentación de Tovar and later continued her studies at La Presentación in Pamplona, Colombia. In addition to her primary academic studies, she received training in music, theater, and sports.
She particularly excelled in volleyball and in playing the violin. Together with her sister Cristina, who played the piano, she formed the musical duo known as the Hermanas Burguera.
On 16 July 1939, she married Elis Enrique León Salas in Tovar, and together they had seven children, whom would later give her 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren (as of June 2026). Due to work-related circumstances, the family later moved to San Cristóbal, where two more children were born. In 1958, the family settled in Mérida, where their youngest daughter was born.
Burguera Dávila has always had a deep religious faith, affection for her family, and strong moral values. These qualities have earned her recognition as a woman of tradition and distinction in Mérida. She also enjoys traditional Venezuelan sweets and occasionally sings popular songs from her youth during family gatherings.
