Martinican Woman Emma Grivalliers Turns 111
Emma Grivalliers, a resident of Sainte-Marie, Martinique, an overseas department of France, turned 111 on 9 July.
Emma Grivalliers was born on 9 July 1915, the youngest of seven children. She is affectionately nicknamed “Man Yaya.” At a very young age, she began her working life in the pineapple fields.
Emma wasn’t the first in her family to reach the age of 100—her mother, Isabelle Florent, lived to be 103. Emma began her working life at the age of 20, employed on the pineapple plantations of the Nouvelle Cité estate. She had seven children, including three boys and four girls.
