Felicidad Hernández Corredera, the second-oldest living person in Spain, is celebrating her 113th birthday today in Salamanca City, Castile and León, as confirmed by her family.
Her great-niece told LongeviQuest that Felicidad was visited by many relatives, friends, and neighbors, and she also received numerous birthday wishes by phone. She was delighted to receive several gifts, along with many flowers and plants, which she deeply adores. She was overjoyed, deeply grateful, and touched, humbly expressing that she did not deserve so much love and attention.
Her great-niece also noted: “as always, she remained sharp, generous, and affectionate toward everyone, just as she has every single day of her life. We are truly grateful to be able to celebrate another year of her life".
Felicidad Hernández Corredera was born in Santa María de Sando, in the province of Salamanca, Castile and León, Spain, on 11 August 1913 to parents Juan Antonio Hernández Martín and Ángela Corredera del Arco. Her six brothers were born before her; so when the only girl arrived, they welcomed her with immense joy and decided to name her Felicidad (Happiness).
She remembers her childhood as a happy time in a very close-knit family. She was much loved and spoiled by her parents, Juan Antonio and Ángela, by her brothers, and also by her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Being the youngest, she was given the lighter chores, such as fetching water from the fountain or taking lunch to the men who were harvesting under the sun.
She never married nor had children, dedicating her life to raising and loving her nephews and nieces; Jesús, Juan José, Inmaculada, Rosario, and José Luis as her own children. She was also always very close to her other siblings and nephews and nieces: Carmen, Ángel, Benigno, Aníbal, and Mary. In 1945, they moved to Salamanca, where she continued to live peacefully with her brother and nephews and nieces. Over the years, Felicidad became “the aunt” to the entire family, friends, and neighbors.
Her family described her as a charming, affable, humble, and generous person, always eager to help and much more concerned about others than herself.
Happy 113th Birthday!

When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."
