Gertrude Malan, South Africa’s Oldest Person, Turns 110

The Oldest known woman in South Africa, Gertrude Malan, turned 110 on 17 August 2026 according to the Cape Town radio station Heart FM.

Gertrude Malan was born on 17 August 1916 in Wynberg, Cape Town, South Africa. A lifelong member of the Uniting Reformed Church in Wynberg, she used to be a primary school teacher. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship at Uniting Reformed Church, where she also taught Sunday school. She was also renowned for her creativity, giving needlework and knitting classes at the church, as well as her talent flower arranging, embroidering and crocheting.

She is the oldest living resident in South Africa with some documentation supporting her age, though a woman Elizabeth Moolman from Riversdal celebrated her claimed 113th birthday in June.
