When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

Jesús Redondo Bermejo, Spain’s Oldest Man, Turns 111

Jesús Redondo Bermejo, the oldest living man in Spain, is celebrating his 111th birthday today in Cáceres, Extremadura. On his birthday, he was visited by Daniel Germán Delgado, Senior Researcher at LongeviQuest España.

Jesús Redondo Bermejo was born in Cañaveral, Cáceres Province, Extremadura, on 2 June 1915. He retired no less than fifty years ago. At the age of 19, he passed a competitive civil service examination and joined his village’s town hall. He served as Town Clerk for seven years in Portaje and later in Pontezuelo. Possessing an exceptional memory, he still recalls that during his military service he could type at a speed of 350 keystrokes per minute.

He was married to his wife for 78 years. Together, they traveled throughout Spain, reflecting another of his great passions: travel. He particularly enjoyed spending his summers in San Sebastián.

His wife, Concepción, passed away seven years ago at the age of 99. Even today, his eyes fill with tears whenever he speaks about her. The couple had three children, and the memory of his beloved wife remains what moves him most deeply.

One of Jesús Redondo’s greatest pleasures is visiting the library, where he has spent countless hours. An enthusiastic reader, he has read more than a thousand books, making reading one of his lifelong passions.

On 29 October 2025, following the passing of Luis Carrasco-Muñoz y Pérez de la Isla, he became the oldest living man in Spain.

According to Dr. Manuel de la Peña, Jesús Redondo’s mental faculties remain intact. His blood pressure and cholesterol levels are perfectly controlled, and his heart maintains a normal sinus rhythm, meaning he has no irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. He has led a healthy lifestyle throughout his life, never smoking or drinking alcohol, although he has experienced some loss of vision and hearing with age. Remarkably, he has never undergone surgery.

To stay active, he follows a daily routine that includes gym exercises and occupational therapy. He has always been disciplined and highly methodical. He enjoyed walking around his village, stopping for a glass of wine, and then returning home punctually at two o’clock for lunch, maintaining his daily routine. Another favorite pastime was gathering asparagus from his small plot of land.

“He has always eaten very little,” adds Dr. de la Peña, who has studied Jesús Redondo extensively and conducted a thorough clinical assessment.

Happy 111th Birthday!
