Kiyoko Kondō, Okayama Prefecture’s Oldest Person, Turns 113 in Japan

Kiyoko Kondō (近藤清子), the oldest living person in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, turned 113 on 1 September 2026.

Kondō was born on 1 September 1913 in Hachihama Town, now part of Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. She currently lives at Sōgyokuen (宗玉園), a special nursing home for the elderly in Tamano City, where she marked her 113th birthday with a smile.

At 113, Kondō currently ranks among the 10 oldest living people in Japan and among the 30 oldest living people in the world.

Kiyoko Kondō’s Daily Life at 113

Even at the age of 113, Kondō continues to maintain a very regular daily routine. She usually wakes at around 5 a.m. and spends the daytime in the living room with other residents. She enjoys coffee in the morning and does upper-body exercises every afternoon after snack time.

Kondō remains determined to do things for herself whenever she can. She is still able to move around by operating her wheelchair herself. She can also stand up from it when bathing or using the toilet. At the age of 112, she performed standing exercises as part of her rehabilitation.

According to staff at Sōgyokuen (宗玉園), the keys to Kondō’s longevity include maintaining her daily routine, enjoying time with other residents, and eating well. She enjoys being around others and rarely spends time alone in her room.

Kondō has a good appetite and prefers meat to fish. She enjoys rice dishes such as chirashi sushi and takikomi gohan, as well as noodles. For snacks, she prefers manjū and Western-style pastries to cold desserts such as jelly. She also enjoys snack foods.

A Long and Healthy Life

Kondō reportedly recovers quickly even when she catches a cold or influenza. She has no history of chronic illness or major disease.

She married at the age of 19 and worked at Mitsui Shipbuilding alongside her husband. In her younger years, she also practiced traditional Japanese dance.

At the age of 86, Kondō moved into a care home. At 98, she transferred to Sōgyokuen, which is operated by the same organization, and has lived there ever since.

When Kondō turned 112 in September 2025, she reportedly said that she hoped to live for another two or three years. One year later, she has now reached the age of 113 in good spirits.
