When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

Lorna Henstridge, Australia’s Oldest Woman, Turns 112

Lorna Henstridge, the oldest living woman in Australia, is celebrated her 112th birthday today in Bordertown, South Australia, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Lorna Henstridge was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on 6 June 1914. She grew up on her parents’ farm near Bute and later moved to Adelaide for schooling. When she started school, her father would ride with her on horseback to the train station, where she would then catch the train to school. Later, she moved to Adelaide to live with her grandmother, attending Unley School and then St Peter’s Girls’ School.

During World War II, she met her husband while working at a library for soldiers, and they married in January 1945. The couple had three children: Jennie, Carolyn, and David, and lived in Victor Harbor and Keith, where they ran a menswear store and enjoyed golf.

On 5 June 2024, just a day before her 110th birthday, she became the nation’s oldest known living woman, following the passing of Olga Abate. At the moment, she is the second-oldest living person in Australia, after 112-year-old Ken Weeks. This is the first time in Australian history that both the oldest woman and the oldest man are aged 112 or older.
