When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

Mildred Giesbrecht, a resident of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, celebrated her 110th birthday on 8 May, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.
Mildred Giesbrecht was born in Gretna, Manitoba, Canada, on 8 May 1916. As a teenager, she and her friends would hike to a bluff overlooking the American border, where they enjoyed picnics in the sunshine.
On 6 August 1939, at 23, she married Philip P. Giesbrecht (1912–1949) in Gretna. The couple shared many happy years together before welcoming their first child, Enid, followed a few years later by their son, Greg. In 1949, tragedy struck when Philip died suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage while on a trip to a nearby town. Although she was still young, Mildred never remarried.
She is currently the oldest known living person in Manitoba.
