Zoraida Montezuma, Costa Rica’s Oldest Resident, Turns 112

Zoraida del Carmen Montezuma, the oldest known living person in Costa Rica, is celebrating her 112th birthday today in San Rafael de Escazú, San José Province.

Montezuma was born in Limón, Limón Province, Costa Rica, on 31 October 1913.

On 20 June 2025, following the passing of 114-year-old Marita Camacho Quirós, the former First Lady, she became the oldest known living person in Costa Rica.

Zoraida Montezuma Ortega, the oldest living person in Costa Rica, has been officially validated by LongeviQuest on 27 April. At the age of 112 years, 178 days, she is also the second-oldest person ever from Costa Rica.

Montezuma was born in Limón, Limón Province, Costa Rica, on 31 October 1913 to parents Juan Montezuma Mora, a mechanic and blacksmith, who worked for many years for the Ministry of Public Works, and Luisa Ortega Mata, a housewife.

She never married nor had children. At the age of 108, she was still able to sing and dance.

She currently lives in a nursing home in San Rafael de Escazú, San José Province, Costa Rica.

Mr. José Rosales Vallejos of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, sadly passed away on 8 July 2026 at the age of 108 years and 141 days. 

He was the third-oldest known living man in Costa Rica.

Rest in peace.

He is the 16th oldest man in the history of Costa Rica.

Faustino Perfecto del Socorro Vargas Pérez was a Costa Rican supercentenarian who is currently the oldest documented man ever from Costa Rica. He was the oldest undisputed person to have ever lived in Costa Rica until being surpassed by Marita Camacho Quirós in 2023.

He was born in Naranjo de Alajuela, Alajuela, Costa Rica on 27 September 1896. He was the youngest child born to parents José Faustino de la Concepción Vargas (1851–1920) and Manuela Margarita Pérez Murillo (1857–1945).

As a young adult, he worked as a bricklayer, before later beginning a career as an operator in the Ministry of Public Works, which involved him personally delivering telegrams to then-Costa Rican President Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno. In 1926, he married Amanda Corrales, and the pair would go on to have eleven children together. The couple would remain together for 77 years until Amanda’s death in 2003. In 1960, he retired from his career at the Ministry of Public Works, and moved with his family to the province of San José, settling in Tibás.

At the time of his 110th birthday in 2006, he remained both physically healthy and mentally lucid, being able to walk with the aid of a cane and give lengthy interviews about his life to reporters. His only significant age-related ailment was his near-deafness, which required people to shout into his ear to communicate. He got up every morning around 5:30 AM, and read the newspaper with breakfast. In 2007, he had 18 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Vargas Pérez passed away on 20 August 2008 in San Juan, Tibás, San José Province, Costa Rica, at the age of 111 years, 328 days.

His age was firstly listed as pending validation by Latin American Supercentenarians (LAS) by an anonymous researcher, Stefan Maglov and James Roberts, and validated by LongeviQuest on 23 September 2026.

Zoraida Montezuma is now exactly one year older than Faustino Vargas Pérez's final age.

Elisa Quirós Rodríguez (b. 23 Sep 1918) of Colonia del Río, San José turned 108. She is Marita Camacho Quirós' cousin, as one of her grandfathers is Marita's uncle (brother of her mother).

Dinorah de la Trinidad Obando García was born on 18 July 1915 in San José, Costa Rica, to parents Pablo Emilio Obando Mazariegos (1890-1925) and Consuelo García Días (1896-1986). She was baptized on 25 July 1915 in San José.

Dinorah had five younger sisters: Genarina (1917-2009), Gladys (1919-1987), María Eugenia (1920-2023), Dora María (1922-2004) and María Isabel (1923-1999).

She passed away on 22 March 2026 in San José, at the age of 110 years and 247 days. At the time of her death, she was the third-oldest living person in Costa Rica.

Her age was validated by LongeviQuest on 29 September 2026.
