Ireland’s oldest man and Galway native Martin McEvilly has died just a few months after celebrating his 108th birthday.

Rosscahill native Mr McEvilly died on Wednesday, October 9, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on July 26 1916, just a few months after the Easter Rising, Mr McEvilly was the youngest of 11 siblings and was the only one who made the century mark.

Throughout his life, Mr McEvilly’s passions have been faith, family and politics.

While many of his brothers and sisters emigrated from Ireland, and many never returned, Mr McEvilly has spent his life in Rosscahill where he farmed the land and raised his family.

He was the 4th known OLP in Ireland.

May he rest in peace.

He was the 4th oldest person in Ireland, his successor is the 10th oldest. The oldest man born in Ireland is the 14th oldest person in the country. He spent 2 years and 44 days as Ireland's oldest man, the longest since Michael O'Connor who spent 4 years and 184 days from 18 Feb 2018 to 21 Aug 2022. He is the youngest person to die as Ireland's oldest man since Vincent Gavin who died on 18 Feb 2018 aged 106 years, 312 days. He is the 34th oldest person in Irish history. Mary O'Leary is the oldest person living in Galway now, the 12th oldest person in the country born on 23 May 1919. I don't know who the oldest living person born in Galway is, he is the 4th oldest man in Irish history and the oldest man in Galway's history, the 5th oldest person in Irish history. Galway, both in birth and death

RIP
