Juozas Mereckas, the oldest resident of Lithuania, died: soon he would have turned 110 years old
At the age of 110, Juozas Mereckas, a resident of Kaišiadorių district, died on Sunday - according to the Register Center, he was the oldest person in Lithuania.
As Eugenija Genevičienė, elder of Rumšiškiės in Kaišiadorių district, reported to BNS, the man would have turned 110 years old on January 26.
"Juozs Mereckas died on Sunday," said the elder.
J. Mereckas had four children.
The old man of venerable age was looked after by one of his daughters, he spent summers at his home in Kaišiadorii district, Dovainonys, and winters in Kaunas with his relatives.
According to the old lady, J. Mereckas was lively and active, "he used to go to the store by himself", but he got sick at Christmas.
J. Mereckas was alone in 2018. the hero of the documentary film "100 years together" created by Edita Kabaraitė. This film became the most viewed Lithuanian film of the "Kino pavasaris" festival that year. In it, 15 Lithuanian centenarians captivate with optimism, and their true and sincere stories not only inspire, but also infect the will to live.
2024 saw 339 centenarians or older residents in Lithuania, most of them women.
Currently, the oldest Lithuanian man living in Kaunas is now 103 years old. His birthday is in March.
Centenarians can be found in almost every municipality.
