Emma Wenda, Austria’s Second-Oldest Person, Dies at 110

Emma Wenda, the second-oldest living person in Austria, passed away in Vienna on 26 September, at the age of 110 years, 81 days. Her passing was first reported by Oe24.at.

Wenda was born in Biedermannsdorf, Lower Austria, on 7 July 1915. She had five siblings. At the age of 14, she completed an apprenticeship as a cook at Hotel Binder in Mönichkirchen, which was considered a luxury hotel at the time. She lived in Biedermannsdorf until 1927, after which she moved with her family to Styria. By the time World War II broke out, she was already residing in Vienna.

She worked as a tram conductor for Wiener Linien (Viennese Lines) from 3 September 1940, until her retirement in 1970. She was married to Josef Wenda until his death in 1969.

At the time of her passing, she was the nation’s second-oldest resident, after Anna Wagner.
