Hanako Ishii of Chiba Prefecture, Japan, Passes Away at Age 112

LongeviQuest regrets to report that Hanako Ishii of Chiba Prefecture passed away on 14 December, at the age of 112 years and 221 days.

On 9 January 2024, a LongeviQuest delegation had the honor of visiting Ms. Ishii in person and spending time speaking with her directly. The moments shared during that visit remain a warm and unforgettable memory for our team.

Hanako Ishii (Japanese: 石井花子) was born in Emi Village, Awa District, Chiba Prefecture, on 7 May 1913. After graduating from high school, she worked until her marriage at age 39 and gave birth to her son at 40. Following her husband’s death a year later, she returned to her parents’ home and raised her child as a single mother. Before her son entered elementary school, she opened a small dressmaking class for neighborhood girls.

Well into her 70s, Ishii maintained a habit of daily walking. At age 100, she developed severe visual impairment due to cataracts and glaucoma but continued to manage daily life with the support of her family. Her relatives described her as calm by nature.

Ishii entered a nursing home at age 100 and, after repeated hospitalizations for bronchitis around age 105, was transferred to a hospital specializing in senior care in Isumi City, where she spent her later years until her passing. Although Ishii was officially recognized as the oldest resident of Kamogawa City based on her registered residence, she spent her final years in a hospital in Isumi City.

Rest in peace.
