Rosaria Martorana, Sicily’s Oldest Resident, Dies at 111

Rosaria Martorana, the oldest living person in Sicily, Italy, passed away in Ragusa on 19 December, at the age of 111 years, 53 days. Her passing was first reported by Ragusa News.

Martorana was born in Ragusa, on 27 October 1914. She married and had four children, all of whom she outlived. She remained in regular contact with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, some of whom she connected with via video calls.

Following the passing of Francesca Fioriglio on 16 July 2025, she became the oldest living person in Sicily.

Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Maria Giovanna Cerami, according to Supercentenari d’Italia.

She is the 9th oldest person in Sicilian history, her successor is 11th in this ranking (unfortunately she passed away 5 days later)
She was the oldest person in Sicily since July 16, 2025 and held that position for 156 days, the shortest time since she held it from April 24, 2014 to June 4, 2014 (41 days)
She died at 111 years and 53 days old, the youngest in that position since Maria Santa Vincenza Butera (who died on January 14, 2016 at 111 years and 43 days old)
