Chester Meros, America’s Second-Oldest Man, Dies at 110

Chester Meros, the second-oldest living man in the USA, passed away in Baltimore, Maryland, on 9 July, aged 110 years, 360 days, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Chester Meros was born in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania, USA, on 14 July 1915, to parents Anthony and Veronica Meros. A graduate of the local high school, he followed his father into the coal mining industry. He worked as a truck driver, hauling coal from Schuylkill County to New York City.

He met his future wife, Helen Anna Lubinsky, at a dance in Pennsylvania. She lived a few miles away in Cumbola, Pennsylvania. During World War II, he moved to Baltimore, where he joined Bethlehem Steel. He began as a machinist’s helper, then worked as a general laborer before becoming a welder. Over the years, he worked at the Bethlehem Steel Key Highway Shipyard and other shipyards in the Baltimore area. Several of his brothers joined him in building Liberty ships at the former Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard. He retired in his early 60s.

At the time of his passing, he was the second-oldest known living man in the United States, after Ed Martin.
