It’s interesting looking back at the “peak” of the numbers (21 to 22) around the end of 2015 and early 2016.

I also remember the amazing group of 115 to 117 year olds that pretty much all arrived at the same time. That was an amazing run given the population of Italy and more like the set of statistics one would have expected from Europe as a whole.

We can only hope those days return.

You did mention what a tough month January was Ale - even worse than the average January I understand.

@chrisr Yes, January '23 could have been the worst month (in the italian history) for mortality of italian people aged 107+. Very sad

Maria Redaelli-Granoli passed away exactly 10 years ago. At this time, Gertrude Weaver's age was not recognized, so she was considered as the 3rd oldest person alive after Kimura and Okawa. I was very scared by the news that she had died the day before her birthday. May she rest in peace!

@record_116 It was very disappointing from a fan perspective that Maria Raedelli-Granoli passed away just one day before age 114. But that's why I say to live each day at a time, we never know when the last day will be. If anything, supercentenarians can inspire us to appreciate that our time on Earth is limited. While some say "I wouldn't want to live that long", the scary part is that we now know that the average maximum lifespan is 115, and that the maximum-maximum is about 125, we can enjoy each day as it comes. Have a nice day, people!

Whilst we can never take the health of a supercentenarian for granted, she appeared  to many to be in pretty good shape at that stage.

Italy has made a comeback in the last year because when Angela Tiraboschi died the new doyenne Domenica Ercolani was only 111. Now that same doyenne is 113 and there are four other 112-year-olds. Doesn’t really compare to the Morano/Gaudette/Projetto/Robucci era though

@ale76 I meant that the new doyenne Mrs. Ercolani was 111 after Tiraboschi passed away. Very sorry for the confusion, I edited my earlier post so it’s easier to understand now
