João Felgueiras, Portuguese Jesuit Priest, Dies at 105

Father João Felgueiras, a Portuguese Jesuit priest, passed away in Dili, Timor-Leste, on 3 July, at the age of 105 years, 24 days. He was the oldest known living person in Timor-Leste (East Timor).

João Vasconcelos Baptista Felgueiras was born in Caldas das Taipas, Braga District, Portugal, on 9 June 1921. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order) in 1942 at the Santa Marinha da Costa convent in Guimarães. He studied philosophy in Braga and theology in Burgos, Spain, before being ordained a priest on 30 July 1950, in Oña, Spain. Following his ordination, he worked in youth ministry in Braga and served as a teacher and spiritual director at Colégio São João de Brito in Lisbon. From 1962 to 1967, he was rector of the Colégio Apostólico da Imaculada Conceição in Cernache.

On 22 January 1971, he departed for East Timor, where he devoted the rest of his life to education, pastoral ministry, and the promotion of the Portuguese language. Father João Felgueiras was also deeply committed to supporting the Timorese people during the Indonesian occupation. He stood alongside the victims of the Santa Cruz massacre of 12 November 1991, offering pastoral care and unwavering support in its aftermath.

In recognition of his lifelong service, he was awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Liberty by Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio in 2002; the Order of Timor-Leste by Timorese President Taur Matan Ruak in 2016; and the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in 2022. In September 2024, during his apostolic visit to Dili, Pope Francis greeted Father João Felgueiras at his customary meeting with members of the Society of Jesus.
